Chapter 6: Integrating Science and Engineering

(6.1) Three Integrating Techniques 
1. Literature-based integration is the use of fiction and nonfiction science books to help children acquire science-related information.
2. Theme-based integration is an instruction in which a major theme or concept becomes the foundation for a learning unit that cuts across subject lines.
3. Project-based integration involves children in actually carrying out a long-term activity in which they investigate a real-world problem. 
Giving students the opportunity to build up their vocabulary will benefit them throughout the class and gives them a wide variety of choices when it comes to their vocab box. Pre-reading exercises help students build their comprehension skills. 
(6.2) Logical reasoning is an important goal of mathematics. It is an understanding of the logical structure of mathematics. In practice, this means that a student can look at groups of items and make assertions about them, as well as the results of grouping and regrouping them. Sets and subsets, open sentences, and communitive, distributive, and associative properties are all covered in this class. Children can use their understanding of mathematical principles to solve problems through science experiences. 
   (6.3) Because societal problems often lend themselves to real-life inquiry-based experiences for students, social studies and science/ engineering can be effortlessly linked. By pushing students to develop a design for a composting process that is easy for students to access, an engineering component may simply be incorporated into the scenario.

"STEAM, at its core, is about integration that embraces standards from each of the respective disciplines. Arts in the context of STEAM include not just the visual arts, but music and humanities as well. STEAM challenges educators to distinguish between integration of the arts as an enhancement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and genuine integration intended to give equal intention to art and STEM disciplines". 

(6.4) Nature inspires art, and art has been used to record and document much of science since prehistoric times. In addition, the arts and music contain a wealth of science and engineering.
(6.5) Inquiry and discovery are the heart of children's science experiences, and they can also serve as the glue that holds several disciplines together during the school day. A teacher who is willing to put up the effort to integrate science across disciplines has a lot of potentials.
